Young Person Selection Weekend 12th-13th October 2013

23rd World Scout Jamboree Young Person Selection Process 

Now the Leicestershire leadership team has been recruited, we are now looking to recruit 45 young people for the next World Scout Jamboree in Japan in 2015.

What is the 23rd World Scout Jamboree? 

A World Scout Jamboree (WSJ) is a gathering of Scouts and Guides from all over the world for an exciting programme of global development, peace, cultural understanding, adventure, friendship and fun. The next WSJ will take place in the summer of 2015, where tens of thousands of Scouts from around the world will gather in Japan for the experience of a lifetime! The theme of the Jamboree will be ‘Wa’, which has many meanings including harmony, unity, friendship and peace.

 

How many people will attend the next WSJ from Leicestershire? 

5 Leicestershire patrols (45 young people) will be attending the 23rd WSJ.

When and where? 

The Jamboree will be in Kirara-hama, Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. From 28th July to 8th August 2015, however the overall trip will probably be 3 weeks in duration and will include; a short stay to Tokyo allowing participants to immerse themselves in the cultural aspect of the city and a Home hospitality (HoHo) experience allowing them to gain knowledge and understanding of how Japanese families live and socialise.

Who is eligible? 

All young people who are members of the movement and were born between 28th July 1997 and 27th July 2001, regardless of how long they have been a member. Those who are a bit older don’t have to miss out as they can attend as a member of the International Service Team (IST). Information about the IST will follow shortly.

Selection process 

To identify the correct candidates Leicestershire will be running a selection weekend camp from Saturday 12th – Sunday 13th October at John’s Lee Wood Campsite. This weekend will allow the selection team to select young people to attend the WSJ who will make the most of the opportunity and be ambassadors for Leicestershire, UK Scouting, and the WSJ experience.

What will be considered during the selection process? 

· Interest in international Scouting/Guiding

· Ability to work in a team, not necessarily as a leader but a full member

· Commitment to Scouting/Guiding

· Commitment to the jamboree experience and training events

Presentation to Parents 

At the end of the weekend there will be a presentation to parents and young people about the entire Jamboree Experience, including the cost and fundraising to help meet the cost.

How to apply? 

Please ask all young people who wish to attend the selection weekend to complete the attached form. Once completed please return along with a recent photograph to James Waterworth, 17 Needham Avenue, Glen Parva, Leicester, LE2 9JL or email james.waterworth@leicestershirescouts.org.uk. The attached form requests essential information and must be signed by a parent and representative from the Scout Unit, the form provides a number of ways for the young people to express themselves about joining the adventure.

Important Note:
Due to age restrictions members of the association are only able to attend one WSJ as a young person. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for young people in your Troop or Unit to take part, a young person’s financial situation should not be taken into consideration, please make sure this information is distributed to all Eligible Scouts and Explorer Scouts within your group.
